A Mainstage Conversation on Reimagining Iconic IP

Scopely took the main stage during the series in a panel titled “Capturing the Magic of MONOPOLY GO!: Reimagining a Timeless IP for a New Era of Entertainment.”

The conversation brought together:
Eric Wood, SVP of Publishing, Scopely
Barry Dorf, VP, Interactive Global Licensing & Business Development, Hasbro
Dean Takahashi, Editorial Director, GamesBeat

Wood shared insights into Scopely’s philosophy as a Learning Machine, emphasizing the company’s commitment to continually iterating—even when early prototypes show promise.

“If your intuition tells you it's not good enough… keep going,” he noted, underscoring Scopely’s willingness to return to the drawing board in pursuit of breakthrough experiences.

Wood discussed the creative challenge of translating the social tension of the classic board game into a mobile environment, explaining how the team focused on capturing the game’s memorable emotional moments, like bankrupting a family member, within a digital construct.

The panel also reflected Scopely and Hasbro’s collaborative approach to IP stewardship—rooted in respect for brand heritage, player insights, and intentionally crafted narratives rather than simple brand collaborations.

“My job is awesome,” Dorf said.
”I get to talk to game developers all day long, right? But then it's like, OK, the team has to be available. It has to be the right team, and the right IP, the right project, and the rights have to be available. Like, it's a sweet spot of a sweet spot of a sweet spot.

Live operations and fresh content remain key to sustaining engagement, with Scopely’s teams focused on “constant innovation, new events, and thoughtful collaborations.”

Wood also spoke to the studio’s long-term view of building forever franchises. Rather than measuring success solely through revenue, he highlighted the importance of the daily habits and enthusiasm of players.

"At the end of the day, consumers giving you their time… that’s the most valuable asset any consumer has.”
