We continue to recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI), honoring the contributions Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans have made to the history and culture of the United States. Say “hello” to Ted.
Curious what it takes to support the IT needs for an entire company?
The best person to talk to is Ted Khuu. Read on below to learn more about Ted, his role at Scopely, what diversity in gaming means to him and the last good book he read.
Tell us a little about yourself and your journey at Scopely.
I'm the Director of Information Technology (IT) based out of the Culver City office. I've been with Scopely for a little over a year.
What are you currently working on and how does your work impact the company?
I'm currently working on re-organizing our IT teams to better support the growth of our company. As we continue to expand, it's important that the IT team is able to scale to meet the needs of our business. By re-organizing, we will be able to ensure that we have the necessary personnel, skills, and resources to support Scopely.
What does diversity in gaming mean to you?
To me, diversity in gaming means having different ideas, perspectives, and experiences represented in the games that we create and play. It's about recognizing that there are many different types of gamers out there, and that by embracing diversity, we can create games that are more inclusive and appealing to a wider audience. This can mean incorporating different types of games, themes, and genres, as well as ensuring that the characters and stories in our games are diverse and representative of the world we live in.
Which Scopely culture tenet are you the most passionate about?
PLAY TO WIN is the one that resonates most with me. I believe that striving for excellence and being competitive are essential to success, both in the gaming industry and in life. In my experience, setting high standards for oneself and pushing oneself to achieve them is key to achieving your goals and standing out from the competition. Whether it's developing a new game or building a team, being competitive and playing to win can help us achieve our full potential.
What is the best piece of advice you have received?
One piece of advice that I wish I knew early on is that it's okay to not know what you want to do, and to just start somewhere. At times, there's a lot of pressure, especially early in our careers, to have a clear and defined path, and to know exactly what we want to do. I think that it's important to be open to different opportunities and to try new things, even if they don't seem like the perfect fit on paper. By doing so, we can learn what we like and don't like, and gain valuable experience and skills along the way.
What’s the last good book you read?
The last good book I read was called "Project Hail Mary.” It's written by Andy Weir, who also wrote "The Martian." It's about someone who was sent to space to save Earth, but unfortunately, when he wakes up in space, he doesn't remember why he's there. Haha.
