Scopelean Spotlight: Drew Fletcher

In this Scopelean Spotlight, we are continuing to celebrate our exceptional Black Scopeleans and elevate their voices for Black History Month.

Meet Drew.

Recently, we had a chance to sit down with Drew Fletcher, a rising star at our Scopely Studio Boundless Entertainment that works on “MARVEL Strike Force.” Read on to learn more about Drew’s journey to becoming a game designer, how his work directly impacts the player experience, and the importance of diverse perspectives in the gaming industry.

Tell us a little about yourself and your journey at Scopely.

My name is Drew Fletcher and I am an associate game designer on “MARVEL Strike Force.” I currently work at the Culver City Hub. I have been at Scopely for three years, including two-and- a-half years as a Senior QA Tester and more than six months as a Game Designer.

What are you currently working on, and how does your work impact our players?

I am currently an Integrator (Implementer) on the combat team. I work with animators, VFX and artists to portray our characters as accurately to the source material as possible. This role is important because characters are the soul of our game. If our characters don't look fun and amazing, no one will want to play. Also, since I'm a huge geek myself I want to do right for the culture.

What does diversity in gaming mean to you?

Diversity in gaming means more stories, more voices and new ideas coming to gaming. It's amazing to see what different perspectives bring to our medium. With diversity in gaming it also brings people into the industry and new people wanting to play video games in general.

Which Scopely tenet are you the most passionate about?

Embrace the adventure. This tenet rings true to me personally and professionally. Getting to immerse yourself into a world and be a hero never gets old. With video games the adventures are numerous and help you discover different parts of yourself. Professionally, the journey from QA to Design is challenging and sometimes feels like it will never end. Luckily, I was able to network, become impactful in QA and start a new adventure in design.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

Network! The industry is small and you will run into the hopefully great people you met along the way. When you network you learn more about: your craft, how others found success and some good games that helped shape their views. Personally, I found Linkedin to be very helpful.

What's the last good movie/show you watched?

“Everything Everywhere All at Once.” This movie was a nice mix of action, humor and heartfelt moments. This was one movie I wasn't looking for but I'm glad it found me. I found the father played by Ke Huy Quan very relatable and cool, especially in his Hollywood version.
