Say hi to Andy.
Tell us a little about yourself and your journey at Scopely.
My name is Andy. I'm the Director of Marketing on the "MONOPOLY GO!" team, and I work out of the Culver City hub in Los Angeles. I've been at Scopely for just about two and a half years now, and initially started on a mix of midcore and max games and quickly moved onto the "Stumble Guys" team, and now I have been working on the "MONOPOLY GO!" team since May.
How would you describe Scopely's culture?
Scopely's culture is quite unique. It is truly a global company – from a day-to-day perspective, we work and interact meaningfully with peers across a few continents, solving problems and working towards common goals. The reality of our global forces is unique in my experience, helping to shape a philosophy of collective efforts and team-oriented successes that other companies I’ve been at don’t offer with the same tangible experience and scope. We value momentum and action in driving towards outcomes, leading to decision making, ownership and alignment being key for each person.
Which Scopely culture tenet resonates most with you?
CARE DEEPLY & EMBRACE THE ADVENTURE. On a personal level, I identify with the CARE DEEPLY tenet at the core, but the one that resonates with me the most in terms of the work I do at Scopely is EMBRACE THE ADVENTURE. The gaming, technology and entertainment industries are an ever-changing landscape that we have to navigate across all three with speed, acuity and passionate dedication; essentially, we're white water rafting down some intense rapids in hopes of finding a path forward. If you jump out of the raft and try to swim alone, you may end up in the same oasis, landing as everyone else - Embracing that Adventure and sticking with the raft allows us to navigate those rapids together, staying much drier along the way and with much more laughter.
What does diversity in gaming mean to you?
Ensuring opportunity not only of ideas but of voice, opinion, and recognition. When we're making stories, experiences, and games for millions of people around the world to engage in, success is agnostic of the origin. Everyone has strengths or gifts to leverage, and bringing a diverse set of people to take on the challenge and allow a broader, more stable framework for success is vital. Digging deeper, we're all shaped by our environments, and in order to foster a wide approach to considering successful ideas, concepts, or opinions, it does mean we need to be highly aware of those environments and backgrounds: race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, culture - these are core formations that allow different perspectives and passions to thrive.
What is the best piece of advice you have received?
Focus on impact. I am a believer in simple, digestible ideas that can easily transcend swim lanes and be bought into on a foundational level across disciplines. Automatically, if we focus on impact, we're pulled into a more strategic level of thinking - what does 'impact' look like? We need to set goals and objectives. What scale or scope of impact? This leads to cross-functional and team-based thinking vs. individual success. It also leads to a necessary, ruthless prioritization and critical thinking about major challenges. In most all situations or environments, focusing on impact will steer you along the right thinking path.
What is your favorite initiative, experience or program at Scopely?
Scopely's Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and the various events they put on throughout the year to support and engage are probably my favorite initiatives here. I think the people involved and the space they are given allows them to be not just a lip-service initiative, but one that is engrained and actively supportive across the company.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
When I'm able to take a little step back from the daily efforts and look across Scopely, I believe there's one underlying element that inspires me. While there are many, many different jobs and functions, we all have a little representation of the “Dreamer” mentality. We're builders and creators, and all have some level of irrational naivete in the grand scale of building something aspirational. It gives me a lot of comfort and confidence that that piece is not lost or diminished in our efforts to succeed on a tangible level.
